Solid Wood Floating Shelves: Species, Sizes and Installation

A floating shelf should look like it grows out of the wall: no brackets, no sag, no visible hardware. Getting there depends on three things: the wood, the depth, and what's behind the drywall.
Hardwood or Pine?
Hardwoods (white oak, walnut, maple, alder, red oak): denser and more stable, with a refined grain. Best for statement shelves beside a fireplace, in a kitchen, or anywhere they'll carry real weight.
Poplar: the choice for shelves that will be painted to match trim or cabinetry.
Pine: a warmer, rustic look at an accessible price. Our Sumas shelves are made from AAA Canadian pine.
Length, Depth and Thickness
Length: our standard shelves run from 2 to 8 feet. Longer runs are made to order.
Depth: 6 to 10 inches suits most rooms. 8 inches holds books and dishes without crowding a wall.
Thickness: a thicker face, around 3 to 4 inches, reads as solid and substantial, and leaves room for the hidden bracket inside.
Proportion: on a fireplace wall or beside a TV, line the shelves up with the mantel or the edges of the screen so the whole wall reads as one design.
The Hidden Bracket Is Everything
A floating shelf is only as strong as its mounting. The best floating shelves slide over a concealed steel bracket fastened into the wall studs or into blocking added behind the drywall, rather than relying on drywall anchors alone. That's what lets a solid wood shelf carry books and dishes without drooping over time.
Finishing Touches
Stain or natural: we finish to match your floors, cabinetry or trim.
Lighting: LED strip lighting under or within a shelf can turn a display wall into a feature in the evening. Ask about it when you request a quote.
Matching pieces: shelves can be built from the same timber as a mantel, coffee table or built-in so a room feels consistent.
Pricing
Our Sumas pine shelves start at $140 for a 24-inch shelf, $160 for 36 inches and $180 for 48 inches (8 inches deep). Hardwood shelves are quoted by species, size and options.

Frequently Asked Questions
How deep should floating shelves be?
Most rooms suit 6 to 10 inches. Eight inches is a good all-round depth for books, dishes and decor.
How do floating shelves stay up?
A well-made floating shelf slides over a hidden steel bracket anchored into the wall studs or blocking, so no hardware shows.
What is the best wood for floating shelves?
Hardwoods like white oak, walnut and maple are the most stable and refined. Poplar is best for painted shelves, and pine gives a rustic look at a lower cost.
Do you install floating shelves?
Yes. Setup is included across the Fraser Valley and Greater Vancouver.
