Custom Wood Fireplace Mantels: Styles, Species and Sizing

A fireplace is the natural focal point of a room, and the mantel is what finishes it. A well-proportioned solid wood mantel adds warmth and architecture in a way a painted shelf or a builder-grade surround never will. Here's what we walk through with every client before we build one.
Choosing a Mantel Style
Solid beam: a single piece of timber with real end grain and weight. The most traditional look, and the best choice where the beam will be seen from the side.
Wrap (box) mantel: three faces of hardwood joined with clean corners. It looks like a solid beam but is lighter, more stable, and can be built in sizes a single beam can't. Because it's hollow, it can also hide wiring for a TV or lighting above the fireplace.
Floating mantel: mounted on a concealed bracket, with no visible supports. It suits modern and minimalist rooms.
Full surround: legs and a header framing the firebox, sometimes with built-in cabinetry and shelving on either side for a complete fireplace wall.
Which Wood Species?
We build mantels in pine, western maple, eastern maple, poplar, alder, red oak, white oak and walnut.
White oak: tight-grained and architectural, and a natural fit for modern homes.
Walnut: deep and rich, for a mantel that reads as a statement.
Maple: clean and pale, suited to bright, Scandinavian-style rooms.
Alder: warm and even-toned, and takes stain beautifully.
Pine: a rustic, characterful option, and the most accessible starting point.
Poplar: the right choice when the mantel will be painted to match the trim.
Sizing and Proportion
Length: a common starting point is the width of the firebox plus 6 to 12 inches on each side. On a wide stone or tile surround, the mantel usually runs to the edges of the surround or slightly beyond.
Depth: most mantels are 6 to 10 inches deep, enough for frames and candles without crowding the room.
Thickness: the visible face is usually 4 to 10 inches. Larger rooms and taller ceilings can carry a heavier profile.
Height: set by your fireplace's clearance requirements first, then by sightlines and any TV above.
Clearances and Safety
Wood is combustible, so the distance between the top of the firebox opening and the underside of the mantel is not a design choice. It is set by your fireplace or insert manufacturer's installation manual and the building code, and it depends on how far the mantel projects. Before we build, we confirm the required clearance from your unit's manual so the mantel is both beautiful and safe.
Living With a Wood Mantel
Finish: we match the finish to the room, from natural oil-look to stained or painted.
Heat: a properly cleared mantel sees gentle warmth, not direct heat. Solid wood handles this well.
Mounting: heavier beams need solid backing or a concealed steel bracket. We plan the mounting with the build.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the best wood for a fireplace mantel?
White oak and walnut are classic choices for a refined, lasting mantel. Maple suits bright modern rooms, alder takes stain evenly, and pine gives a rustic look at a lower cost.
How far above the fireplace should a wood mantel be?
It depends on your fireplace and how far the mantel projects. The minimum clearance is set by the fireplace manufacturer's installation manual and the building code, so check that first. We confirm it before every build.
How long should a mantel be?
A good starting point is the firebox width plus 6 to 12 inches on each side, adjusted to the surround and the room.
Is a wrap mantel as good as a solid beam?
A wrap mantel looks like a solid beam from the front and sides, and it is lighter and more stable. A solid beam is the better choice where the end grain will be seen up close.
Can a mantel hide the wiring for a TV above the fireplace?
Yes. A hollow wrap mantel can carry wiring for a TV or accent lighting, so no cords are visible on the wall.
Do you install mantels in Vancouver?
Yes. We build in Chilliwack and install across the Fraser Valley and Greater Vancouver.
