Custom Wine Cellars and Wine Walls: Planning Your Wine Storage

A wine collection deserves more than a metal rack in the basement. A custom cellar or wine wall protects the bottles, shows off the labels, and becomes a room guests want to see. We build wine display cabinets, wine bars and wine rooms designed around a collection.
Three Ways to Store and Show Wine
Wine wall or display: racking built into a dining room, kitchen or hallway wall. It's ideal for bottles you'll drink within a year or two.
Wine display cabinetry: furniture-grade cabinets with racking, glass doors and lighting. Good for living spaces where a full room isn't practical.
Wine room or walk-in cellar: a dedicated room fitted floor to ceiling, often with a glass wall or door so the collection can be seen from the next room.
Planning Questions
How many bottles? Plan for the collection you'll have in five years, not today.
Display or long-term storage? Bottles stored for years need steady temperature and humidity. Bottles you'll drink soon only need good racking and somewhere out of direct sun.
Bottle sizes: standard 750 ml bottles, magnums and large-format bottles each need their own racking.
Case storage: leave space for unopened cases arriving from wineries.
Racking, Wood and Lighting
Racking styles: individual bottle racking, diamond bins for bulk storage, angled display rows that show labels, and label-forward "floating" pegs.
Wood: racking needs a stable wood that won't move in a humid cellar. The cabinetry and trim around it can be your choice of hardwood to match the house.
Lighting: low-heat LED lighting shows off labels without warming the bottles.
Climate Control
A true long-term cellar needs a cooling unit, a vapour barrier and insulated walls and door. The cooling system is specialist work for a refrigeration or HVAC installer, and the woodwork should be designed around it from the start so the room, the racking and the climate control work together.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need a cooling unit for a wine cellar?
Only for long-term storage. Bottles you'll drink within a year or two do well on a wine wall or in a display cabinet away from heat and direct sun.
How many bottles should I plan for?
Plan for where your collection will be in about five years, plus space for full cases.
Can a wine cellar have a glass wall?
Yes. A glass wall or door lets the collection be seen from the next room. For climate-controlled cellars, insulated glass helps keep the temperature steady.
Do you build wine cellars in Vancouver?
Yes. We build in Chilliwack and install across the Fraser Valley and Greater Vancouver.
